I've written a rather different version of Kate before (in Out of the Shadows (http://marysutherland.livejournal.com/63008.html)), but this was the first time I'd done Kate/Irene, and tried to explore why Kate might be willing to stay with someone so full of tricks as Irene. (As you will see in the second story, there are a whole lot of possible parallels between Kate/Irene, Sarah/John and John/Sherlock of someone getting dragged in the wake of someone who brings a thrill to their life).
I've played a lot with different solutions for who is organising what about Irene's "execution"; once you've got Irene, Sherlock and possibly Mycroft involved, the possibility for multiple layers of deception are almost endless.
