I've had a lot of discussion with 2nd Skin over Greg's failing marriage, which has influenced several fics each of us has written or are writing (see e.g. her Bridge (http://archiveofourown.org/works/375215)). I think it's quite hard to admit both that a marriage is over and that your own decisions may have played some part in it failing.
It's very interesting to realise how strange the events at the swimming pool look to an outsider; it's a case that abruptly disappears off Sherlock's radar, and several of my fics have explored outsiders' often inaccurate views of what might have caused that.
