Rating 12 (non-explicit slash)

This was inspired by Second Skin's Lestrade Lies and by Fengirl's Five Acts meme request for "sleeping and bedding themes". Her prompt reminded me how often in BBC Sherlock canon we see John Watson either asleep or just waking up.

Many thanks to Small Hobbit for betaing.

Set at the start of The Great Game.

Down these mean streets a man must go who is not himself mean, who is neither tarnished nor afraid. The detective must be a complete man and a common man and yet an unusual man – Raymond Chandler, The Simple Art of Murder

There are doubtless meaner streets than those of Hoxton, now that gentrification is creeping in. )

BBC Sherlock

Rating 15 (swearing, implicit slash)

Summary: It hasn't been Greg's day, his week, his month or even his year.

This was inspired by Second Skin's Persuasion, and started off as a prequel and remix of that. It has ended up much, much longer...

Note: The chronology of Series 2 is notoriously dodgy. This fic assumes that Scandal takes place in April 2010-Summer 2011, Hounds in Summer 2011 and Fall in Spring-Summer 2012. There are spoilers for Scandal and Hounds in later parts.

Betaed by the wonderful Small Hobbit.

Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4

When Greg got to the nondescript cafe that the voice on the phone had given him as a rendezvous, he found Mycroft already there, drinking coffee with a pained expression on his face. )

Spoilers: For The Hounds of Baskerville

A sequel to There May Be Trouble Ahead, and Before They Ask Us to Pay the Bill.
Betated by the amazing Blooms84.

Summary: Sherlock has a lot of things to worry about, before and after his trip to Dartmoor

"With your natural advantages, Watson, every lady is your helper and accomplice. What about the girl at the post-office, or the wife of the greengrocer? I can picture you whispering soft nothings with the young lady at the Blue Anchor, and receiving hard somethings in exchange. All this you have left undone."

"It can still be done."  – The Adventure of the Retired Colourman

Hard to kill an idea once it's firmly lodged in your head, Sherlock thinks on the long plane trip home from Karachi. Irene Adler is a saleswoman of desire, after all, and if you're around her long enough you can almost be persuaded there's something about sex worth buying.  )

Summary: Sherlock has saved Irene's life, but she isn't going to let him win that easily.

My companion flushed up with pleasure at my words, and the earnest way in which I uttered them. I had already observed that he was as sensitive to flattery on the score of his art as any girl could be of her beauty.  –  A Study in Scarlet, chapter 4.

Sherlock Holmes has just saved her life, and Irene's trying to work out what to do with him – do to him – next. )

Spoilers: minor for Scandal in Belgravia

In Greg's view, the correct number of Valentine's Day cards for him to get was one. From his wife. He'd had too many horrendous rows with Jane over the years when other people had showed any interest.  So by now the whole of New Scotland Yard knew that any cards received by him would be forensically examined and the culprits identified. After which, they would be reported to Personnel for creating a hostile working environment.

This year, though, he was expecting zero cards. Jane had left, but he hadn't told anyone yet. Though if you worked with a bunch of detectives, it was always hard to conceal things. He'd winced slightly at the envelope left on his desk on 14th February, and then noticed something. The handwriting on the outside was very familiar. Maybe because it was his own.

Written inside the card was one of Ronsard's sonnets. Someone with access to a forger and who knew he was fluent in French. Hadn't the British Government more important things to do? But it was oddly comforting finding someone he didn't have to explain things to. Below the poem was a single line: Is it too soon to express my appreciation?

He dug out a number kept for emergencies and texted: Not too soon. Jane's told me she's not coming back.

Spoilers: for Hounds of Baskerville.

Inspired by a post by flawedamythyst complaining about the multiple guns turning up in Hounds.

Greg's voice on the phone had the no-nonsense toughness that Mycroft was coming to adore.

"Your operation's still leaky, Mycroft. Sherlock knew I was armed."

"A deduction rather than a leak."

"I wasn't carrying the gun when I met him."

"Sherlock is aware that on occasion, for his own protection, I have his colleagues, friends, carry weapons. Anything rather than letting him near a gun."

"Right. But what about the third pistol? Mr Knight's? Did someone nick that from Baskerville? I hear the security's not much cop."

"No. Even a thief or a black-market arms dealer might think twice about letting an unstable young man like Henry Knight near a handgun. Only one person would think that a good idea." Mycroft waited, wondering if Lestrade would be able to follow his reasoning.

"Oh, you mean Dr Frankland gave it to him? In the hope he might shoot someone and end up in Broadmoor, or kill himself?"

"Exactly," Mycroft replied with pleasure. "Frankland picked up more than sloppy speech habits in the US, it would appear. I thought he might have more of his arsenal still on him, which was why I wanted you armed. I don't approve of guns, but they are sometimes necessary. If left in the capable hands of a man who doesn't secretly long to be James Bond."

It was supposed to be Molly in danger, not her, Anthea thought, sitting and watching the sleeping woman. That was why she'd been taken to the safe house: they couldn't leave a kitten like her wandering round the jungle on her own.

"Moriarty posed as her boyfriend and then blew up her morgue for fun," Mycroft had said at the briefing. "Ms Hooper needs protection, but a male bodyguard might alarm her."

"And I won't?"

"The evidence suggests she has very poor gaydar, but be discreet, please."

Anthea had been, of course; three weeks in, Molly had no idea the effect she was having on her. Ridiculous for this to happen, she knew. Anthea was Mycroft Holmes' PA, kept half the British government's secrets. Several very clever women had tried to seduce her over the years. As well as a larger number of very stupid men who apparently didn't understand about lipstick lesbians.

Molly didn't try to seduce Anthea. She just adored her, with an innocent sisterly adoration that seeped quietly through Anthea's armour-plated defences. Made her nostalgic for romantic urges she thought she'd long since overcome.

Impossible to tell Molly the truth now. She'd see it as a trick, another clever plan to manipulate her, Anthea realised. And even a kitten, if you cornered it, could scratch till you bled.
